My Name Puzzle

My Name Puzzle

[15 Minutes]

Help you child discover letters by making a colorful name puzzle together.

You'll need:

• index cards • different colored markers

What to do:

  1. Write your child's name on an index card. Capitalize the first letter and write the rest of the letters in lower case. Make each letter a different color.
  2. Make a second card exactly the same and cut it apart so each letter is separate.
  3. Even though your child cannot read, he can put his name puzzle together by matching the colors and beginning to note the shapes of the letters.
  4. When this activity becomes less challenging for your child, make a letter puzzle with only one color. Now your child must rely on recognizing the letters without help from matching colors.
  5. Consider making name puzzles for other family members.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How many letters are there in your name? Let's count them together.
  • Let's match the socks in the laundry. Can you name each person to whom the socks belong?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop pre-reading skills, pre-writing skills and matching skills.
