Rainbow Sandwiches

Rainbow Sandwiches

[45 Minutes]

Discover the gold at the end of the rainbow when your child digs into this colorful sandwich!

You'll need:

• sharp knife (ADULT USE ONLY) • 4 slices of white bread (a good stiff and solid loaf) • 3-oz. pkg. cream cheese at room temperature • strawberry, grape, or mint jelly OR sugarless fruit preserves • plastic spoon and knife

What to do:

  1. Help your child use a plastic knife to cut crusts off each slice of bread.
  2. Show him how to use the plastic spoon and knife to spread 2 tsp. of each filling on three of the bread slices as follows: strawberry or grape, cream cheese, mint.
  3. Show him how to stack the slices on top of each other. Place the fourth slice of bread on top of the stack. Then, chill the sandwich in the refrigerator for 1/2 hour, if possible, to make slicing easier.
  4. Cut the sandwich with a sharp knife into 2 triangles or 4 small squares.
  5. On different days, try different spreads to find your favorite combinations.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What shape should we cut the sandwich into?
  • Do you see any (triangles, squares, and so on) in this room?
  • What colors were the spreads we used?
  • What is your favorite color?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing small muscle skills and an understanding of colors and shapes.
