A Game of Fish Sticks

A Game of Fish Sticks

[20 Minutes]

Do you like to go fishing with your family or your favorite friend? Is it still rainy and damp? While you’re waiting for the summer weather, you can go “fishing” right in your own living room with this fun game and a friend or two!

You'll need:

• many pieces of thick paper, plain or colored • pencil • colored markers • scissor • string • long sticks, one per player • one die

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you need.
  3. With your child, design a template for a cartoon fish shape.
  4. Help your child trace the template many times on the thick paper, creating at least nine fish.
  5. Have your child carefully cut out all of the fish.
  6. Together, decorate the fish shapes as you choose.
  7. Help your child place a magnet on the “mouths” of each fish.
  8. Help your child tie a magnet to the end of a long piece of string (approximately 3“ long, one for every player.
  9. Show her how to tie the other end of the string to a stick, which will be used as a fishing rod.
  10. Ask your child to draw a “pond” on a piece of paper, upon which all fish will be placed, ready for play.

How to play:

  1. Determine who will roll the die first (youngest? oldest?).
  2. The first player rolls.
  3. If the player gets a one, two, or three, he “fishes” one, two, or three times.
  4. If the player gets an odd number above three, he loses his turn; if he gets an even number above three, he has to give a fish to the opponent to his right.
  5. Play continues in predetermined order until all fish in the “pond” are gone.
  6. Player with the most fish wins.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
