Homemade Napkin Rings

Homemade Napkin Rings

[30 Minutes]

Linen, which is made from flax, was first used by the early Egyptians. The Egyptians also produced textiles made from cotton imported from India. It is thought that the word linens, which describes household items such as cotton sheets, napkins, and towels is most likely derived from the Egyptian word linum. Make these festive homemade napkin rings for cloth or paper napkins.

You'll need:

• empty paper towel or gift wrap rolls • scissors • stickers • pieces of fabric, yarn, foil, or other craft scraps (to represent Thanksgiving themes) • markers or crayons • glue or paste

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you'll need.
  3. Invite your child to cut 2-inch rings from empty cardboard rolls to use for the actual napkin rings.
  4. Encourage her to decorate the rings as she wishes, using scraps of fabric, yarn, foil, and/or painting them.

How to use:

  1. Together, talk about different ways to create napkin rolls for special occasions; for example, Thanksgiving and fall holidays.
  2. Consider giving some napkins rings to your family or friends as presents.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Why do you think we use napkin rings?
  • How should we decorate the napkin rings for the Thanksgiving holiday?
  • What colors should we use?
