Sandy Sand Candles

Sandy Sand Candles

[45 Minutes]

It is thought that indoor lighting began around 50,000 years ago when the Cro-Magnon man found a fiber wick and placed it in a hole that held animal fat. Make candles using sand molds and enjoy the warm glow.

You'll need:

• containers, such as cake pans, pie tins, coffee cans, etc. • wet sand • candle wick • paraffin wax • food coloring • old pot • stove top

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through before you begin.
  2. Gather everything you'll need and always remember art safety.
  3. Fill the containers with wet sand. Press a hole into the sand - the size you want the candle.
  4. Ask an adult to help you melt the paraffin wax over low heat until the wax is liquid.
  5. Let the wax cool down to a warm temperature. Add food coloring to the wax.
  6. Carefully pour the wax into the sand mold and place the wick in the center of the candle.
  7. The wax will take a day to solidify.
  8. When it becomes hard, gently pull the candle out of the sand.
  9. Enjoy the warm glow of the candle.

Useful information:

On raniy summer day my step mom and I make these sand candles. We have created some outrageous colors- they give off such a pretty glow. (Morgan, age 15)
