Wooden Mixing Spoons for Father's Day

Wooden Mixing Spoons for Father's Day

[25 Minutes]

Father’s Day may have originated in the early 1900’s, but it wasn’t until 1924 that President Calvin Coolidge declared Father’s Day a national holiday. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation naming the third Sunday in June Father’s Day; a day to recognize and honor all dads. Make these wooden mixing spoons and give to someone special.

You'll need:

• craft glue • toothpick • paint brushes (very fine to medium) • small pieces of sponge • acrylic paints ( a variety of colors) • 3 wooden mixing spoons • 3 candle cups 1/2’ diameter • 3 wooden beads 1 1/4 “ diameter • ribbon 1/2 wide a variety of colors

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through before you begin.
  2. Gather everything you’ll need and always remember art safety.
  3. Begin by painting the wooden beads. To paint faces on the beads, first paint the color of the skin on the beads.
  4. Then paint the egg cups, these will be used as chef hats. You can paint them different colors or you can paint them white.
  5. Let dry.
  6. Take the sponges and dip in paint to paint hair on the beads.
  7. Use toothpicks dipped in color to paint on eyes, mouth, nose, and cheeks.
  8. Let dry.
  9. Glue the beads to the top of the wooden spoon handles.
  10. Glue the chef’s hat with the open end down to the top of the bead.
  11. For finishing touches, take pieces of ribbon and tie in a double knot around the handles just under the heads.
  12. Let sit for a while to dry and harden.
  13. Give to someone special on Father’s day.

Useful information:

My dad loves to cook. On father's day he does the cooking and we do the cleaning. My sister and I made dad lots of these mixing spoon handles. We painted funny faces on them. we hope he likes them. (Mary Ellen, age 14)
