Homemade Rustic Picture Frame

Homemade Rustic Picture Frame

[40 Minutes]

The very first works of art were painted on cave walls. Artists often framed their drawings with painted lines. As time progressed, artists painted on canvas and wood. These portable pieces of art were actually framed. The frames not only highlighted the painting, but also were meant to protect the works of art against thieves. Make this special frame to highlight favorite photos or drawings.

You'll need:

• 4 twigs about the same size • cardboard • glue • a photograph or drawing • paint • paintbrush • hanger

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through before you begin.
  2. Gather everything you'll need and always remember art safety.
  3. Decide which picture you will frame.
  4. Figure out the size of the frame.
  5. Take a walk outside to collect 4 twigs. The twigs will be used as the sides of the frame.
  6. Glue the twigs together in a rectangular or square shape. To get a closer fit, notch the twigs together before gluing them.
  7. Cut the cardboard to fit behind the frame.
  8. Carefully glue the picture to the cardboard.
  9. Glue the cardboard to the back of the twig frame.
  10. Glue a hanger on the cardboard on the back of the frame.
  11. If you wish, paint the frame or glue on decorations.

How to use:

  1. Consider framing pictures of family, friends, or pets.
  2. You may wish to give this frame as a gift to someone special.

Useful information:

There are lots of pictures in my bottom desk drawer. I looked them through and decided to frame a couple. My dad and I often take walks in the woods. We found some interesting twigs to use as frames. He helped me notch the twigs together to make the frame more secure. (Angela, age 14)
