Grilled Corn on the Cob

Grilled Corn on the Cob

[20 Minutes]

Corn or maize is native to the Americas, its origin is still mysterious, but historians think corn originated in the Tehuaccan Valley of Mexico somewhere between 4600 and 7000 years ago. Domesticated corn ears have been found in caves in that area, dating back to about 5000 B.C. Early corn is not very different from the corn of today. It is a plant where nothing is wasted. Husks are used for tamales, corn silk has been made into medicinal tea, and dried kernels are the foundation for corn flour, cornmeal, corn oil, and corn syrup. Enjoy corn-on-the-cob, cooked over hot coals or cooked on the grill.

You'll need:

• 1 ear of corn • 1 Tbsp. butter • ice cube or 2 Tbsp. water • aluminum foil • measuring spoons

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you'll need.
  3. Let your child put one ear of corn on a piece of aluminum foil.
  4. Let him add butter and one ice cube or some ice water.
  5. Wrap up the foil. Secure it tightly and twist the ends.
  6. Place the corn packet in the coals or on a grill for 10-15 minutes. Turn it often.
  7. Remove the corn from the grill.
  8. Another time, try roasting other vegetables this way.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • When we wrap the corn in aluminum foil, why do you think we add an ice cube or water?
  • How does this corn taste differently from canned corn?
  • What else should we serve with the corn?
