A Boat Poem

[20 Minutes]

Spend time together creating five-step poems about boats. You'll be helping your child develop fine writing skills!


You'll need:

• paper • pen or pencil • crayons (optional)

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you'll need.
  3. Together write five-step poems about boats on paper. Each poem has five lines, and each line follows a format.
  4. Line 1- size and shape of vehicle (boat)
  5. Line 2- color of vehicle
  6. Line 3- purpose of vehicle
  7. Line 4- where you'd like to be in the vehicle
  8. Line 5- name of worker who drives vehicle
  9. An example of a five step poem on boats is:
  10. BOAT
    bathtub shape
    silver gray
    sailors travel
    from sea to sea
    the captain
  11. Invite your child to illustrate his poem.

How to use:

For a variation, write five step poems about other vehicles and a variety of topics.
