Popsicle Stick Picture Frame

Popsicle Stick Picture Frame

[30 Minutes]

The very first works of art were painted on cave walls. Artists often framed their drawings with painted lines. As time progressed, artists painted on canvas and wood. These portable pieces of art were actually framed. The frames not only highlighted the painting, but also were meant to protect the works of art against thieves. Make this special frame to highlight favorite photos or drawings. These picture frames make perfect personalized gifts for your child to make and to present to relatives and friends.

You'll need:

• wooden craft sticks • hot glue gun (ADULT USE ONLY) • markers and/or tempera paints • colored glues (optional) • glitter glue (optional) • pencil • tape • yarn, twine, or string (to hang frame) • tissue paper (optional)

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather evrything you'll need.
  3. For each frame, use hot glue gun to join together the overlapped ends of four craft sticks to create a square frame shape. Let dry. (Wide craft sticks work best for this project, but if you are using thin craft sticks, place two thin craft sticks side-by-side along each edge of frame before gluing ends together.
  4. Help your child make a loop out of yarn, twine, or string and use a hot glue gun to attach hanging loop to one tip of each frame. Let dry again.
  5. Invite your child to use the markers or paints to decorate each of his frames.
  6. Encourage him to use colored glues and glitter glues to add decorative dots and squiggles to his frame.
  7. You may help your child to personalize his frame. Let him use a pencil to write his name and date on the front of the frame. He can then use markers to trace the letters. You and your child may wish to jot a warm message on the frame.
  8. When each frame is complete, tape a picture of your child to the underside of the frame. To give the frame as a gift, help him wrap it in tissue paper.
  9. If you wish, use hot glue gun to attach a magnetic strip to each edge of each frame so frames can stick to the refrigerator.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What type of message should we writeon the frame?
  • To whom would you like to give this?
  • How should we decorate this frame?
