A New View Game

A New View Game

[20 Minutes]

What if you were a snake or another small creature on the ground? Would the world look different to you? Play this observation game together, where you and your child can verbally and graphically capture “a new view.” Playing this games helps improve language and writing skills.

You'll need:

• sketch pad or paper • pencil • colored pencils (optional) • camera and film (optional) • construction paper • glue • stapler

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you’ll need.

How to play:

  1. Find a comfortable spot indoors or outdoors where you and your child can lay low like a snake. Lie down on the carpet and stare at the room or if outdoors, try looking up into a tree.
  2. Take a few moments to look around from this new point of view.
  3. Talk about what you both see. Is life different when you live down on the ground?
  4. Encourage your child to use a pencil to sketch a series of pictures showing what he sees.
  5. If you prefer, he can take photographs from this new vantage point.
  6. Let your child mount the drawings or photos on construction paper. Brainstorm together and dream up captions to add.
  7. Invite him to staple the papers together along one edge to make an original art book about this adventure.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How does this room look different when you look at it from the ground?
  • How do people look different when you look at them from the ground?
  • What descriptions should we add to your pictures?
