Grow it Again Turnip
[25 Minutes]
Investigate this vegetable together and then make a hanging basket that will grow right in your kitchen.
You'll need:
turnip sharp knife (ADULT USE ONLY) spoon string large fork or metal skewer
What to do:
- Use the sharp knife to cut off the pointed end from the turnip.
- Using a blunt knife and spoon, help your child scoop out the turnip leaving the sides about 1/2 inch thick.
- Help your child use a long fork to poke 3 holes through the turnip, spacing them evenly around the edge.
- Invite her to poke a string through the holes and knot each with about 12 inches of extra string for hanging.
- Help her to tie the strings together at the top and then to hang the turnip in a sunny window.
- Ask your child to fill the turnip with water and continue to keep it filled. Together watch it for growth.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Describe the turnip both inside and out.
- Have you ever eaten a turnip? What did it taste like?
- What might grow out of the turnip if we keep it filled with water?

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop observational skills and an understanding of plant growth.
