French Toast Snow Family

French Toast Snow Family

[20 Minutes]

French toast is derived from the French words "pain perdu", which literally means lost bread. Lost bread was a dish intended to make use of day-old or stale baguettes. Use day-old bread to make this seasonal treat with your child for a leisurely weekend breakfast or a light evening supper together.

You'll need:

• long, narrow loaf of French bread • powdered sugar and/or maple syrup • 1/2 cup milk • 1 Tbsp. sugar • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon • 2 eggs • salt • shortening or margarine • raisins • griddle or frying pan • knife (ADULT ONLY) • bowl • spatula • spoon, fork • measuring spoons, cups

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you'll need.
  3. Cut several oval-shaped slices from a loaf of French bread.
  4. Invite your child to crack 2 eggs into a shallow bowl and beat until foamy.
  5. Help him measure and add 1/2 cup milk, 1 Tbsp. sugar, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, a dash of salt, and mix the ingredients well.
  6. Heat a griddle or frying pan to medium-high heat.
  7. Grease the pan with margarine.
  8. Invite your child to dip the bread into the egg mixture coating each side. Carefully place it on the griddle, and cook on each side until lightly browned.
  9. Encourage your child to place 2 or 3 ovals on a plate and form a snow person. Invite him to add raisin facial features and buttons. Sprinkle with "snow" (powdered sugar), and eat with maple syrup if you wish.
