Name that Picture!

Name that Picture!

[30 Minutes]

Can you draw? Here's a game where you sketch a picture and have your opponent guess the word. You can use any noun (verbs and adjectives are harder to draw) and why not use winter words during this cold month of January. Playing this game helps improve analytical thinking skills.

You'll need:

• paper and pencil or chalkboard and chalk • index cards • marker • container for cards • timer

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through with your child before you begin.
  2. With your child, gather everything you'll need.
  3. Using a marker, both you and your child write winter words (or any nouns) on each index card. Examples are: snow, snowman, sled, coat, icicle, skiing, football, stocking cap, hockey, gloves, snowsuit, geese, groundhog, polar bear, penguin, soup, hot chocolate, etc.
  4. Let your child place these into a bag, box or other container.

How to play:

  1. Decide who will go first.
  2. The first player draws a card from the container. Set a timer for 30 seconds.
  3. The player proceeds to draw the picture of the word on paper or chalkboard.
  4. In the allotted time, the opponent tries to guess the word from the picture that is being drawn. Take turns being the drawer and guesser. Keep a tally as to how many words are guessed correctly in the time frame.
  5. After all the cards have been used see who has guessed the most correct words. This person is the winner.
  6. NOTE: It would be best if a neutral person writes the words on the cards. This way neither player has any idea of the words in the container.
