[30 Minutes]
Snow shoeing is an all around conditioning activity with universal appeal. Anyone can do it ! Kids of all fitness levels can easily strap on a pair of the over-sized “platform shoes” to explore the outdoors and get to places snowy white and beautiful that you would never be able to access otherwise. Although it is a conditioning aerobic activity – it’s a sport that allows one to “stop and smell the roses” – as you stop to catch your breath – breathe in the beauty of your surroundings as well!
You'll need:

- Ask your local outdoor sports store where some great snow shoe trails are or better yet – blaze your own! Beware – if there is a lot of fresh snow – it will be a workout!
- Strap on your snowshoes – making sure the bindings are well fastened to avoid losing a shoe.
- Pack a small fanny pack or light backpack with water and a light snack.
- Review your trail or path with your snow shoeing partner.
- Agree to pace yourselves and to stay together!
- You may wish to bring along a camera if you're going to hike up to any height - the views will be breathtaking!
- If using poles – they are the most help on steep terrain – up and down. They also add extra conditioning as your are using both arms and legs.
- Now – just walk!!! It’s that easy.
- If coming down a steep hill–you can almost ski– try it!
Useful information:
My dad lives in the mountains and when I visit him, we put on our snowshoes and go for an outdoor adventure. It is a really good workout and it's mazing how many animal tracks we see. Funny thing, you keep pretty warm while snow shoeing. ((Shaun, age 14)
