Interview a Relative

Interview a Relative

[30 Minutes]

There are five W's of interviewing: who, what, where, when, and why. These help the interviewer gather information from an interview. Look at family photographs, interview a relative and explore your family’s history to discover the stories behind those great old photographs.

You'll need:

• family photographs • marker

What to do:

  1. If possible, print out these directions. Read them through before you begin.
  2. Gather everything you’ll need.
  3. Choose a family member you would like to interview. Look through some old photographs and pick out several.
  4. Number each one on the back with a marker in the order of your interview.
  5. Get together with this relative and proceed with a storytelling session. Ask her to describe the people and places in each picture. Ask questions to jog her memory of related stories. Don't forget the five W's of interviewing.
  6. With your interviewee's permission, capture her tales on a tape recorder.
  7. Share your completed interview with other family members.

Useful information:

My great-aunt from Greece came to visit our family. She brought old pictures of my dad's family. She and I played this game. I learned so much about my family. We shared all the information with my dad. He learned some things too! (Sophie, age 14)
