Interview a Relative
[30 Minutes]
There are five W's of interviewing: who, what, where, when, and why. These help the interviewer gather information from an interview. Look at family photographs, interview a relative and explore your family’s history to discover the stories behind those great old photographs.
You'll need:
family photographs marker
What to do:
- If possible, print out these directions. Read them through before you begin.

- Number each one on the back with a marker in the order of your interview.
- Get together with this relative and proceed with a storytelling session. Ask her to describe the people and places in each picture. Ask questions to jog her memory of related stories. Don't forget the five W's of interviewing.
- With your interviewee's permission, capture her tales on a tape recorder.
- Share your completed interview with other family members.
Useful information:
My great-aunt from Greece came to visit our family. She brought old pictures of my dad's family. She and I played this game. I learned so much about my family. We shared all the information with my dad. He learned some things too! (Sophie, age 14)
