Sewing Heart Shaped Cards

Sewing Heart Shaped Cards

[20 Minutes]

Heart sewing cards help your child develop the small muscles of the hands while making a seasonal decoration for your home.

You'll need:

• cardboard • pencil • scissors • yarn • scotch tape • paper hole punch • plastic craft needle (OPTIONAL)

What to do:

  1. Draw the outline of a heart on a piece of cardboard.
  2. Cut out the heart.
  3. Help your child use a paper hole punch to make holes around the edge of the heart.
  4. Wrap the end of a piece of yarn with scotch tape to make a "tip".
  5. Help your child push the yarn through the first hole and attach the end of the yarn on the back of the cardboard with tape.
  6. Encourage him to continue "sewing" around the heart outline. When finished, attach the end of the yarn on the back with tape.
  7. Punch a hole in the top and thread a piece of yarn through for a hanger if you wish.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What other shapes could we make on our sewing cards?
  • What other things do people make by sewing? (clothes, shoes, curtains)

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing small muscle skills and eye/hand coordination.
