Footprints in the Sand
[30 Minutes]
The joy of playing in the sand is something that most of us remember from our childhood. Try these ways to help your child experience this sensory material!
You'll need:
bare feet wet sand
What to do:
- Take a walk with your child to an area where wet sand is available (beach, lake, river bank, sandbox, etc.)
- Invite your child to remove her shoes and socks. Let her feel the sand on her bare feet and between her toes. Discuss these differences. How does the sand feel? Does it feel different from walking with bare feet on grass or cement?
- Both you and your child can make footprints, toe prints, and heel prints in the sand. Compare the sizes.
- Help your child make a left footprint and a right footprint. Ask, "Is there a difference between the left and the right? What is it?" Take turns trying to walk in each other's footprints.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Do you like to walk with bare feet outdoors?
- How is it different from walking inside the house?
- How does sand feel in the sun? In the shade?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop large muscle skills and language skills.
