Sheet Painting

Sheet Painting

[25 Minutes]

Painting outdoors on a large surface is a great activity to do together. The resulting mural can be used as a tablecloth for a picnic or a party decoration.

You'll need:

• old sheet or large roll of paper • clothesline or fence • feather dusters, squirt bottles or water guns • liquid starch • food coloring or thin tempera paint • paint containers

What to do:

  1. Help your child hang an old sheet or large roll of paper on a clothesline or fence.
  2. Use either liquid starch and food coloring or thinned tempera paint.
  3. Help your child choose one of the following ways to apply paint:
  4. Dip feather dusters into paint and "dust" onto the paper.
  5. Fill squirt bottles or water guns and spray the paint on the paper.
  6. Turn on some lively music as she paints for a movement experience as well.

How to use:

After the painting is dry, use it for a wall decoration or a party tablecloth.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • What happened when you squirted on the paint? How did the colors look?
  • Try painting the sidewalk with water. What happens?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop small muscle skills and creativity.
