Caterpillar and Butterfly Salad

Caterpillar and Butterfly Salad

[15 Minutes]

This healthy salad takes only minutes to prepare. It's also a science lesson.

You'll need:

• banana • green pear • 2 lettuce leaves • 2 raisins • sharp knife (ADULT USE ONLY)

What to do:

  1. Cut a pear into wedge slices.
  2. Invite your child to help peel the banana. You can cut a slit in one side of the banana.
  3. Show your child how to push pear slices into the slit with the green peel showing. Encourage him to add raisin "eyes." Now it is a CATERPILLAR.
  4. When he adds lettuce leaves to both sides of the caterpillar, it becomes a BUTTERFLY!
  5. Make several of these for the whole family to enjoy. Talk about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Which part of the butterfly will you eat first? Which part last?
  • What color butterflies have you seen? Where were they?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your child is developing concepts related to science and an introduction to food construction.
