Caterpillar and Butterfly Salad
[15 Minutes]
This healthy salad takes only minutes to prepare. It's also a science lesson.
You'll need:
banana green pear 2 lettuce leaves 2 raisins sharp knife (ADULT USE ONLY)
What to do:
- Cut a pear into wedge slices.
- Invite your child to help peel the banana. You can cut a slit in one side of the banana.
- Show your child how to push pear slices into the slit with the green peel showing. Encourage him to add raisin "eyes." Now it is a CATERPILLAR.
- When he adds lettuce leaves to both sides of the caterpillar, it becomes a BUTTERFLY!
- Make several of these for the whole family to enjoy. Talk about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.
Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.
- Which part of the butterfly will you eat first? Which part last?
- What color butterflies have you seen? Where were they?
Useful information:
While you are having fun together, your child is developing concepts related to science and an introduction to food construction.
