Milk Carton Blocks

Milk Carton Blocks

[20 Minutes]

Give your child a never-ending supply of blocks to use in a variety of creative ways with empty milk cartons! This is a fun lesson in recycling.

You'll need:

• scissors • pairs of milk cartons in various sizes (1/2 pint, pint, quart, 1/2 gallon) • newspaper • tape • OPTIONAL: self adhesive paper

What to do:

  1. Invite your child to help you collect pairs of clean, empty milk cartons.
  2. Cut off the tops.
  3. Show your child how to stuff one of each pair with newspaper. Then slip the stuffed carton into its empty mate. (You may have to cut the stuffed carton down each side at the corners to help it slide down more easily.)
  4. Use tape to secure it.
  5. If your child wishes, help him cover the boxes with contact paper.
  6. Encourage your child to build houses, towns, or whatever else he wishes to make with the blocks.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • How did you make this creation with the milk cartons?
  • How many cartons did you use?
  • Shall we save more cartons to make more blocks?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, this activity helps your child develop small muscle skills and an understanding of balance.
